Two for Shauna

June 25th

A couple of pages that came my way over the weekend. Thought I’d pass them along for those who are interested in these sorts of things…

Government promotes dumb terminals to cut global warming:

Under the proposals, small business and home users will access office applications and email and browse the Internet via a green PC service based on these datacentres. The home devices will use 98 percent less energy than standard PCs and be built with 75 percent fewer resources. A pilot service is expected in early 2007 with full rollout in late 2009.

Building Public Library Websites with Drupal. I *heart* Drupal. Do public libraries? Should they?

    Thanks for the links, babe!

The first one is so conflicting for me. The snakey, vindictive part of me loves that it will cut into Windows sales. The environmentalist part of me adores the potential savings in power and junk. However, the cautious librarian says: “Britain, be careful. You already have more surveillance cameras on you per capita than any other Western nation. Do you really want all your information stored on central servers owned by others?”

That part of me also thinks that Google’s got most of this covered or started.

As for the second, I didn’t really understand too much (conjunctions are fun AND good for you) but I think a more integrated OPAC/library website cannot be a bad thing, especially if it’s LAMP and features the more visually tactile experience of a simulated card catalogue.
