Moodle Madness

July 17th

I’ve been doing some more looking at Moodle, and thought I’d jot down some links.

Moodle’s Glossary – Not just for definitions anymore – I think Learning Time should be a Moodle site.

The glossary is great when just used as a glossary. When combined with auto-linking it enables students to quickly and easily learn more about difficult concepts that appear anywhere in the class. The glossary is also ideal for other purposes.

VirtualBox Update

July 16th

A little while ago I posted something about VirtualBox. According to this report, Virtualbox on 64-bit Ubuntu works like a charm.

I’m not currently running the 64 bit version, because when I installed there was still some chatter about Firefox, among other apps, not being ready for the 64 bit world. Perhaps now I should install the 64 bit version and run a 32 bit virtual box?

Tabbed File Manager in Ubuntu

July 12th

Found a good post about installing a lightweight file manager for Ubuntu called PCMan. PCMan gives you most of the functionality of Nautilus, but also has tabs. I was sold immediately.

I like tabs. Tabs are good for you. Why adopt desktops and folders as your metaphor if you’re not going to put tabs on the folders? Have you ever dealt with paper file folders that didn’t have tabs? They exist, and they’re crap.

It’s a small change, but oh-so-helpful.

Security, Doom and Gloom

June 28th

The Missing Generation – Not a useful title, not much in the way of advice, but a good editorial. The subtitle is more illuminating: “Universities need to wake up to the realities of the web and produce security-conscious IT graduates.”

Put simply, today’s security issues are no longer about technologies, but increasingly about the human element of the implementation of those technologies; in a word, mistakes. We can find errors in four key areas: systems design, development, implementation and operations. While an automated test can help tackle issues in the [...]

I have yet to give this a try, but it looks very helpful: Installing Xen on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn – the complete newbie’s guide.
